Is it anyone here using ThermalRight HR-03 Plus on the 8800-cards?
http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/main_product_hr03_plus.htm
If so, opinions about it?
I am thinking about getting one of theese but I will try to make the pipes 'I' or 'L' shaped instead of its original 'U'-shape. ;)
I know I could use the stock cooler with another fan but I really hate all thoose small screws. ;)

EDIT: I just realized it was the 'Plus' modell. I also fixed the link.
I already used one bro.
Think it as its not the best for it.
Its a good heatsink I must say, but you know, for 8800 series, they already have very big coolers, and do they job fair.
Anyway, I think its a good one and will get you about 20 Celsius in Load.

Thank you VERY much for thoose links! ;) It does look good to me...
And in a way they explain why I want to modify it.
Here you can see two mounting ways:

And here are the results with them:

When the pipes are going UP from GPU, the temps are better. I bet that if they used a chassi that is up-side-down the result would be almost the oposite...
My motherboard is laying on the table so a design like this Silverstone-cooler would suite me better

Or even letting the pipes not being bent at all.
Do I understand your answer right if I asume you have found a cooler that you like better? (second row in your reply) If so, may I ask wich one? ;)
Sorry for my bad english if i missunderstood you.
Regards / Anders
EDIT: corrected link... AGAIN! ;)
Well, thinking about physics, then probably it sounds right.
Gas going up when hot so it works better in no.1 than no.2 @ madshrimps.
So, lets say thet using BTX model should work opposite as you say.
Just let me remember that many models from years ago in the past say that heatpipes are designed to work in every possition giving always the best results.
For example, XP-90 was a difficult one to think, because heatpipes just dont go from down to up in any way unless you have your bard lying on the table.
Lets think the same for Thermalright Ultra 120, in which mounted in case would stop its working heatpipe mechanism???
I havent found another better air cooling than this for 8800 (sorry, yo probably misunderstood the second row, but I was actually thinking on WC).
So, try it and if you can, try it before and after the mod.
Greetings.

The pipes that are placed highest on the Ultra 120 is getting warmer in my case. But if you turn it 90 degrees they will probaply have more equal temps. The cooler still works though as the temps are spreading in the material. (i know, I am an expert of explaining thing. :D )
A Ninja with pipes on all four sides might be a better example as there are always some pipes at the top when the motherboard is placed inside a chassi. Still (atleast from the tests I did) it works better when the motherboard is laying on the table than if it is 'standing' on the table (note: NOT placed inside a chassi).
Well, I have had a SS connected to my gfx. Unfortunally the card got condesated today so I had to stop my tests. That is why I want a good aircooler. I am not considering WC so that is out of the question.
Thank you very much for your replys, it is fun to discuss theoris of cooling. :)
if you're thinking about improving the cooling for 8800GTX - you may want to consider mounting some CPU cooler, no? :)
(comparing our special 88GTX with Titan Vanessa TypeL on to the one with that Thermalright - you get like 10C lower temps with CPU cooler, hehe) :)

Actually, I have been thinking about that. ;) Even if I did not write anything in that thread I have had quite a few looks at it. :) As I am testing the DFI board now I have one 'issue' with that though: I want my debugger card where I can see it when sitting at the desk. Yeah, i know, I am a lazy son of a b***h. :)

Hey m8, cool to see ya in here too ^^
I got the HR03+ mounted on my 8800GTS640 a few days back - temps before were 63c idle and mid- to high 80's during load. Now (on stock speeds) its doing 47c idle and never gets hotter than 61c - I'm using a 120mm Arctic-Cooling AF12025 atm, takes a bit of fiddling around, but the enclosed 92mm holders can work with a 120mm.
Cons are the VGA ram sinks that come with the HR03+: they're utter crap. Waiting on a Swiffy 8800SMC kit before going out to hunt those MHz - Nossy already worked his magic vmods on it :)

Hello!
I've got one on my 8800GTX XXX from XFX and well... yesterday I was playing again with dark messiah and forgot to switch on the fan of the heatsink... so I was playing almost 2 hours with passive cooling LOL.
Heat sink was REALLY HOT, but it was working right imo so the VGA didnt freezed or rebooted rofl.
BTW I modded it bending the heatpipes in 90ยบ Angle, so now the heatsink itseld is horizontal to motherboard
